The Yi Jing lines

Preface

For millenniums the Yi Jing(or I Ching depending on the Romanization) fascinated east and now west. It had great influence in Daoism and Confucianism, Chinese medicine, Chinese Geomancy(Feng Shui), Martial arts, and the Chinese thinking in general. After so many time we are still trying to understand this book.
Why this book was created? It was created for predicting situations between different levels of yin and yang. When the lowest level and the fifth part of six levels are yang and the rest yin (this is , read from bottom to top, yang yin yin yin yang yin- gathering forces) what this situation represent?
The Yi Jing is not written in Chinese, it is written in a subtle language of broken and unbroken lines. We need not only to translate the text but “translate” the lines. As would not make sense a translation of the bible for someone not acquainted with Christianity, or a book of physics by someone not acquainted with this discipline, The translation of a vague and dubious language as is Chinese without knowing the use of the Yi Jing would not make sense. The terms are too technical to understand: first line unbroken, second line broken, third like broken, forth line broken, fiith line unbroken, sixth line broken; say this to a person that never heard of the Yi Jing (and maybe even the ones that work with the Yi Jing) and they don’t know what this really mean. In this book I “translate”, give everyday examples, of these terms to a form that everyone can comprehend. First 9, second 6, third 6, is too technical too, and people don’t understand. In this book I “translate” it too. Before us, the mythical and unreachable Yi Jing become deciphered; there’s for sure a lot of things to be known and mistakes to be corrected, but the code that the Yi Jing is written is now plausible to everyone.
Why we should trust our fates in this book? Decades ago Richard Willhelm and Carl Jung faced the problem that the Yi jing was seen as a magical book; now, although their help, we still face this problem; in this book I try to give a rational use of the book, with a example of usage and then we can test and see if it works or don’t. In this book I give a concrete example that this book can describe and guide a nation or a family act in a determined situation.
Don’t take this book as a complete explanation, we are just starting to fully understand the Yi Jing, take this book as a result of my ongoing studies; this book is not and will not be never complete, perhaps will have a final version when I die or do not have the ability to continue to advance these theories. Don’t use this book as a simple translation as have dozens out there, there is more capable persons that have better understanding of both English and Chinese, and I am not the best example of writter, but in understanding the language of the lines, maybe I can help.Use this book with your favorite translation.

1-Vigorous 乾 qián
Yang yang yang yang yang yang

The Judgment: Supreme prosperous, favorable persistence

This character shows the power of the skies, a sun 日rì rising over some plants, and 乙yǐ germinating, creating something. The meaning of vigorous come mainly from the text on the third line. Others possible translations are creative, acting, initiative, and
heavenly, that fits with the view of the trigrams composed by heaven but don’t translate well in the third line.
This is a complete firm hexagram, represent the pure firm energy, represented by the dragon, the most powerful of the animals. It’s too much strong, the fact that it is not balanced does not mean it is not favorable. If all the parts of this nation are yang it will, and should, act vigorously. If this nation do not act as vigorous as a dragon it won’t get the benefits of this situation. May be a shock to the softness oriented Daoist and the culture that affirms that balance is the unique answer, but in this situation you should act mercilessly and as yang oriented as possible, battling like the dragons that produced thunders and was said their sweat brought rain, and that is beneficial .This don’t mean success is assured no matter what however, could have another more powerful dragon in your way, but is very propitious, after all you are the dragon, the most powerful of the animals, no man can stand a chance against you, not even the elements of nature.

If the first part is too yang…Dragon submerged, don’t act

The masses are very strong, all the lines are strong, this government is like a dragon, here in the first line he is still submerged, and it’s not the time to act. Why not act in a time that it is so strong and is so favorable? It is easy to imagine that simply because this line is in the beginning it’s not time to act, but others yang first lines don’t have the same prediction; the answer to this question is look the hexagram like a whole. Because the rest of the lines are strong, in this context, the power represented by this too strong line find proper opposition and can’t find the proper time to act.. The masses so strong ask and urge to act, but all the government is strong too and don’t listen to the urges, not having any place of power ,the masses are not used, this government is like a dragon, that was believed to sleep underwater before the thunderstorms of the summer, with its power not yet ready to show. This is probably the more clear example that the Yi Jing was not a collection of seemly ramdomly divinations, but that had a rational knowledge beyond ever seen behind. You could say virtually any other vague and interpretative lines as having other meaning, but the incisive “do not act” in this context cannot be a coincidence.

If the second part is too yang… Dragon appearing in the field, favorable to see a great man

The official is strong, and in this supreme yin place even if it’s a subordinated place (yin place) he can transmit it’s orders. The official in the most receptive place. Here the dragon start to emerge; Maybe we don’t look fixly to the horizon since there is so much to look around us, and don’t see it rising, perhaps we mistake his head with a tree, his sinuous body as mountains, but someone with a great perception can see it.In a time where it’s so strong is favorable to see the great man, that is, a great adversary, a great confront approaches.

If the third part is too yang… Noble throughout the day vigorous, over night is fearful, as if sever, no blame

The authority here in a situation so strong, the action will be intense. In a government that is completely strong in the second command place(second highest yang place), it will act continously to exhaustion, and when night comes and it he is tired, there would be fear; but fear not. The heavy weight carried by such time is normal.

If the forth part is too yang… perhaps jumping over an abyss, no blame

Here the minister is too strong. In a nation completely strong is like a dragon, here jumping over an abyss. Too close to the ruler here there is a risky of acting too boldly.

If the fifth part is too yang…Flying dragon over the skies, favorable to see a great man

Here you can see the dragon flying at the skies, all can see its power. In the supreme yang place even acting too boldly, all follow it’s orders, if the dragon don’t risk flying upward and challenge to rule the skies, all this potential will be wasted.
The ruler is powerful, in a government so powerful can do almost everything, it’s favorable to see the great man, this is, a great adversary, because of the strength and activity of the nation it is proper to act and take the highest obstacle( a great man).

If the sixth part is too yang… Arrogant dragon will regret

Because it’s too high is easy too see this line represent going too far, but there’s others firm line at the sixth place that don’t represent going too far. Because the situation here is too firm as a whole, in this context, this line represents overdoing.
Here the personalities of this nation act too boldly and make this nation looks more strong than it is(because this line should read only if this line is too strong and the other parts simply strong. That is not good.

If all the parts are too yang… see a group of dragons without a leader, auspicious

The text literary say “a group of dragons without 首shǒu head” meaning leader, like the sixth line of the hexagram 8: Alliance.
Here all the places are very yang, this government is not a dragon, is like a group of dragons, none of them are stronger than others(all lines are very yang), this government is totally very strong, this is very auspicious.

2- Great Earth 坤 kūn
Yin yin yin yin yin yin

The Judgment: Supreme prosperous, favorable the persistence of a mare, the gentleman go in a journey, first feel lost later find a master, favorable southwest, find friends, northeast loses friends, content determination.

The character shows 土 tǔ earth and 申shēn extending, the vast earth that embrace and accept everything.
A complete yin hexagram, considered one of the most auspicious hexagrams. Why a hexagram that is given qualities as poor, weak, passive (with other authors it is even worst) can be so auspicious? In the Yi Jing, the whole is more the sum of its parts, separated they can have bad connotations, but united, in a hexagram where there’s not a single yang place there is no differentiation of strong and weak.

If the first part is too yin… Stepping on hoarfrost, solid ice is coming

The masses are very weak, in a government totally weak this is just a signal of the winter (yin principle) is coming. The too humble masses offer no base for this nation and problems will arrive.

If the second part is too yin… upright, great, not repeated, not unfavorable

The official is very weak, in a government that is totally weak he is ready to receive orders, in the supreme yin place, as long he is upright, he don’t need do nothing twice.

If the third part is too yin… can persist in restraint, perhaps dealing with royal services, cannot produce but lead to conclusion

The third part too yin, even been in a place of authority (yang) its not recommended to start plans, but been lead is the characteristic of yin, you can produce and lead others plans to conclusion.

If the forth part is too yin…Tied in a sack, no blame no praise

In a totally weak nation, side by side by the ruler, the very humble minister can’t do much

If the fifth part is too yin…yellow skirt is supreme auspicious

Here the ruler is too humble, in a nation totally humble, it still need guide the nation with subtle force, like wearing a yellow, a lucky color, underwear.

If the sixth part is too yin… Dragon battle in the field, his blood dark and yellow

A sixth line represents going too far. Other sixth line too yin are favorable, but in this context where the hexagram is completely yin it represent too much weakness, inviting someone strong,(the dragon) to attack. Here the personalities of this realm are too humble and show the weakness of this country.

In the sixth line you are going to far, this government is too weak and the personalities act to humble and shows the weakness of the nation to the word, exposing it to invasions.

If all the parts are too yin… Favorable prolonged determination

If all parts is too yang the entire nation is too weak and need an everlasting determination.

3-Storing 屯 tún
Yang yin yin yin yang yin

The Judgment: Supreme prosperous, favorable persistence. Have no use have somewhere to go, favorable appoint officials.

The character show one grass from 艸 cǎo , ancient form of草, growing through the soil, accumulating forces to break the barriers and find the sun, and the difficulties that this effort brings. When read zhūn it mean difficulties, when read tún it mean store, accumulate.
Others translations are difficulties, and difficulties in the beginning; Difficulties is the other meaning of the character that represents, probably preferred here because of the trigram water that in the context of the hexagram 29 pits, and principally because of the line reading that say there that exist danger, now on top of this hexagram. This makes sense while translating the character in the second line but not much on the fifth line.
The masses strong, with the majority of the other lines yin, in the beginning, and the ruler strong, it is a time of gathering forces. It still not time to venture outside, it’s favorable to have people to help you. Here the masses with most of the other lines yin urge to act helped by the strong leader, but the masses are too low to make difference.

If the first part is too yang… Firm soap-berry, favorable a standstill determination, favorable appoint helpers

The first line is too yang, in the beginning is strong like a firm soap-berry, this nation is ready to act in the near future, is favorable to appoint helpers, all this latent energy will be soon used.

If the second part is too yin… Gathering forces as if obstructed, riding a horse squad. It’s not coming bandits, it’s someone that comes to marry. The woman try but have no babies, ten years and then have babies

The second line is too yin in times of gathering forces, the supreme yin place weak don’t have the energy necessary to act, it impede the urges of the masses and the ruler. Though the usefulness of the woman (yin principle) was to give his husband heirs, they’ll pass for a moment of difficulties but will finally with time will overcome through accumulation of forces.

If the third part is too yin… Following a deer without warning in the middle of the forest, the gentleman almost as good as giving up. Proceeding is a problem.

The third line too yin, the gathering of forces, in the second highest line of command(yang), is too weak and the first line forces too change and don’t encounter resistance, there’s a risk of going to far like hunting a deer in the midst of a forest and get lost.

If the fourth part is too yin.. riding a squad of horses, seek marriage, proceeding is auspicious

this passive line, roaming like riding on horses, should seek appoint helpers, but not simply somebody, seek a longevity help like a wife or a husband(this don’t mean your help need really to come from a marriage, although it would be good). With such a help would be auspicious to proceed with your projects.

If the fifth part is too yang… Store some meat, a little is auspicious, a lot is inauspicious.

This too much strong line in this commanding position is almost ready to act, the error is it can wait too much, like someone that store meat, but in excess only atract robers, the accumulation should not be great. Here the ruler is strong and making the final preparations to act (accumulating forces), If he makes to much preparations the masses strong will urge to act and precious time will be lost.

If the sixth part is too yin… Riding a squad of horses, tears of blood flow

This too much weak riding horses with a squad to help, is too much weak in the highest possible place of seeking accumulate forces, is the weak point in a time that still need preparations. Here the personalities act to humbly, been the highest representation of the nation, show weakness in a time that the ruler and the masses want to act.

4- Ignorant 蒙 mèng
Yin yang yin yin yin yang

The Judgment: It is not me that seek the ignorant, the ignorant seeks me. First consult I inform, second and third is trouble, if is trouble then I don’t inform, favorable persistence.

The character shows one 一yī dim-sighted pig 豕shǐ under it’s cover 冖eating plants 艹, only waiting to be eaten.
Others translations are the inexperienced, the youth fooly. I was tempted to use the mildly term inexperienced, but it would induce the error of thinking that age and time simply mean virtue (altough the known respect of the chinese for the elders, and their experience with matters is certainly usefull, but not infalible). Imagine if Confucious at the start of the studies had to submit to the Ideas of the corrupt and lazy administrators of his time, just because their older administrators had more time administrating the state; Imagine if when the accupunture points were discovered it had to be supressed because of the anterior methods were used for longer time; Imagine when Taijiquan was created it was discredited because there were already older types of fight; and possible applies to all other progresses of the world ; certainly this hexagram don’t make this mistake. Finally It not means only a young, as said, age sometimes is not proof of knowledge, and one of the text lines specifically cites a young ignorant, wich would be otherwise useless if the word 蒙 mèng already had this connotation, since each line speaks about a specific situation, and there it means the ignorance of a youthful.
The first part of the judment shows the natural order of things, the ignorant should seek the sage, the contrary, if a sage need to convince a fool, would be a waste of time, this happened throughout the history inumerous time with genius beyond their time; seek to instruct the capable man and ignore the fools, they’re a lost cause; of course dicerning between someone that needs instruction, a ignorant, and a fool, that don’t want and can’t learn should not be a easy task, the character 蒙 mèng probably is broad and encompass both. The second part, probably still speaking of a fool, shows it asking again and again as a mean of seeking some mistake in the sage, opposed to seeking the error in the system. This should not be used as a excuse of invalidating one of the few methods of testing the effectiveness of the Yi Jing, that is checking the result again (some authors say that the translation should be “first consult I inform, if he or she ignores the second and third, I don’t inform”, saying that was a practise testing again the consult with a second and third answers, citing one example of this the judgment of hexagram 8 union); if you ask any competent expert in an area you probably may see change of ideas, and with in subjectives concepts he may give different responses to the same subject; even a error as the lack of memory to recover a exact data or a contraditory information(even if imediately corrected) may be used by fools trying to attack another person. Is that kind of temptatives the Yi Jing is trying to prevent; if a person says ideas with seemly no patterns and have rigorous flaws in their systems, of course this person needs further analyzation. Of course, as you should imagine for the ideas of the book, the situation changes, but if it change so quickly between the first and a immediate second consult, what would be the use of a consult if the situation transforms so fast?
Here the supreme yin place is strong and the other humble lines, with the exception of the top line, the strong yang at the supreme yin place assume a inner position of leadership, a place that is not suitable in the whole situation, and the top yang line shows a strength beyond the place of command (fifth line) with other weak lines offering a weak base.

If the first part is too yang… Educating the ignorant, favorable apply punishment to the people, use interrogation with shackles, in this way proceeding is problematic.

This too weak line, is in the very beggining, in times of ignorance, there is still time to educate, and, different then most people think, apply punishment; Sun Tzu said “what army there’s more frequency of punishment and rewards”(should be the winner), Mozi used it to mantain order, even Confucious, thought there’s more important shame then pure punishment, but this does not mean people should not be punished, is exactly the contrary, he exposed one of the main characteristics of punishment: the correct use of punishment: should be one that create a empathy and a sense of shame in the punished, and not some kind of vengueance. It is proper to use interrogation with shackles, so the punished is under control, he still not learned his or her lesson; some authors see a mistranscription of 說shuō (speak) of 脱tuō,meaning that’s “remove the shackles”, which don’t make much sense in the context of this line; in fact you could even translate “discuss about the use of shackle”, having similar ideas. Proceeding in a time that still need preparations in not favorable.
Here the masses are very humble, in a nation where the official place is strong and the personalities show a strength that is beyond the necessary, the masses are very weak to support the action os the personalities and the official and should be educated to maintain the proper conduct.

If the second part is too yang… A confined ignorant
, auspicious; receiving a woman, auspicious; the son can have his own house

This too yang line, Its too bold, in a position of receptiveness, and the top yang line, followed by three yin lines, It brings lucky if the inexperienced is confined, and not venturing in action as he should be urging to act in a non proper time. Receiving a gentle help like a woman is auspicious. But he can still mind his own business, like having his own house.

If the third part is too yin…It is of no use having a woman, see a man of a higher status, don’t bow to him

If the third line is too weak, in this stage where should expect some responsability and activity, the two yang lines are the line of excess (sixth) and the line of the supreme receptive place(second) act without respect to a higher ranked person, with the necessary procedures. The often used translation say “a man of bronze”; the text says “see a 金jīn(metal, gold)人rén(person)”, and that the woman do not have 躬 gōng, 身shēn(body) and 弓gōng(a bow) , meaning yourself, loose control, or literary not bow(as a sign of respect).

If the fourth line is too yin… Trapped ignorant, severe

The fourth line is too passive, in this position of support and almost supreme power, the supreme power(third line) weak and the beyond everything six line yang acting boldly, contrasting to the previous yin lines, and the yang line in the receptive position seen no opposition, there is not much the nation can do, like a trapped inexperienced.

If the fifth part is too yin… the ignorance of a young is auspicious

The fifth place is too humble, in the place of command the inexperience of someone that is simply young, or uneducated( that is, if it is not his fault), is propitious, if the yang line above acting boldly, it will be sought no fault in his acts, for been to humble and the place primarily to blame, but like a young uneducated that do not follow some conventions of educated people, no one will blame it for this.

If the sixth part is too yang… We hit the inexperienced; not favorable to act like robbers, favorable to defend against robbers.

This too much strong line in the highest place beyond the principal place(fifth) with all the lines been yin except the second part act boldly with no support of the other lines, and the second line in what should be the place of supreme receptivity just don’t help. Been beyond all others lines this line don’t listen to anyone, been in the last stage is to late for any light action, in this context is favorable even with the violence, even been brutal and most of the time, now it’s for the own good of the nation. Is not favorable to become robbers, but defend against them: it’s not time to do things that you should be punished, you should be prepared against such transgretions.Probably the Yi Jing was very practical and should not mean that being robbers are wrong, just that, in that situation, was not propicious, as the text suggests. For example a group of robbers trying to steal food in order to survive from a tyranical and selfish goverment, would be such robbers a bad thing? The Yi Jing is bery pure and clear, it just analyzes the situation and describe the results, not make moral judments, that, if one’s believe being necessary, should be applied.

5-Needing 需 xū
Yang yang yang yin yang yin

The Judgment: Have faith, brilhant prosperous, pesistence means auspiciousness, favorable to cross the great river.

This character shows 雨yǔ at the top, the need for rain, a fundamental necessity on the ancient agricultural society, and 而ér, a beard, probably showing the costume of stroking the beard with the hand while waiting and thinking in need of something, that shows in the meaning of this character: and, moreover.
Others translations are getting wet 濡(this character has the trigram water on the top),waiting檽 , because this character represent a wait for something needed.
In this hexagram the fourth and six line are weak with the majority of the other lines strong, the supreme yang place strong have it helper the forth line and the superior sixth line weak, it shows all its power except by the first three lines that, together make a very strong beggining, lead by the third line, a second line in command, make the need for more power, is favorable to cross the great river, you should overcome the obstacles to get what you need. The indication to cross the great river somewhat contradict the translation of “waiting” this hexagram, altough seemgly contradictory, these contradictions are easy found especially in a dificulty book as the Yi Jing; this could mean that you should wait for starting big plans but dealing strongly with the dificulties(the river to be crossed).

If the first part is too yang… needing in the outskirts, favorable the use of constancy, no problem

This too strong line in the beggining, show the start of a desire, going outside the security of the city to search for what he want, is not exactly the place to act beeing too low but it is not a problem too, the important is the constancy of the act that will lead you to what you need.
Here the masses are strong, the ambition is great, the constancy of the masses working for more.

If the second part is too yang… needing in the sand. The ordinaries will talk, auspicious in the end

The supreme yin place too strong shows the needing for something, altough have an obstacle, the river, implicit here by the fact that one’s is waiting in the sand. This the desire have the two yang places, and shows a ambition that maybe will rivalrize with the third, that at least is what the ordinary will talk; but will em well.
Here the official, in a place that he is receptive, is strong, but the two strong lines are commanding the hexagram e the masses are focused in what they want.

If the third part is too yang… needing in the mud, cause bandits to arrive

In the second command(yang) place too active, the risk of the ambition going beyond necessary, with the subordinateds first and second strong, acting against the isolated fifith line.The excessive desire in searching even in difficult ground like a mud place, will only invite others to try to take the reason of your quest.

If the fourth part is too yin… needing at blood, come out from the cave

In this position where lead by the strong second in command and all its subordinateds strong, the isolated fifith line this line should obey, this line is right in the way of the three strong lines right below it, with the situation representing desire, even a battle could be occurred, the subject bleeding, but this line should not be isolated as in a cave and should follow, being a passive line, the fifth line.
In this situation the minister too humble will not be favorable to the ambition of the authority, official and the masses below, and even the fifth line is in seek for something and can not help.

If the fifth part is too yang… needing amidst drink and food, persistence is favorable

If the supreme yang place is too strong, all the ambition have a strong leader, is like waiting confortably with enough supplies, all is according to the plans.
Here the ruler acts directs all the ambition of the three first lines and the minister and the upper line don’t offer any resistance.

If the sixth part is too yin… enter in the cave, have unexpected guests, three people come, respect them and it will end auspiciously.

If the top line is too yin it’s the end, with all this desire this humble place should retire to a hidden place, a cave. The most used theory about the three people is that they represent the three first yang lines; but why this adivise is only read in this line? One possibility is that here the higher place all the ambition accumulated throughout the hexagram enconter weakness, them the risk is the ambition of the first three lines surpass the commadship of the fifth line, and this too weak line favors insubordination throughout the hexagram.
Here The personalities show a weakness of the most famous persons in the nation, principally the three first lines come in scene with it ambition may want to overcome anything and not respect the proper hierarchy, but if they are respected in their urges all things will end well.

6-Lawsuit訟sòng
Yin yang yin yang yang yang

The Judgement: Have trust, obstructed. Fearfull, in the middle of the process is auspicious but the end is inauspicious. Favorable to see the great man. Favorable cross the great river.

This character shows 言yán talk to the left, indicating the discussion and talk that a process need and 公gōng, public, state; fonétic, or maybe meaning to take a particular dispute to public, to be resolved by the state. This character simplified is 讼.
In this character the third and first line are weak giving the, next to them, Strong supreme yin place a power over them even been so low, and the strong fifth line, followed by the also strong yang fourth and sixth place, in the three upper positions, create a power that is so great that even leads to conflict (represented by a lawsuit), altough fearfull of the result, but you should have trust, altough obstructed (by an opposition, the other part of the lawsuit). The middle of the process(at first) will look promising, but the end seems to be inauspicious. Favorable to see the great man, the opposition against you have a lawsuit. Favorable to cross the great river, the danger of a result inauspicious (like the danger of crossing a river)can be faced and overcomed.
Here the official that should be receiving orders is the active power between the weak masses and authority, giving a inner leadership, but controlled by the strong, superior squad of three strong jobs, but the inner leadership may cause trouble.

If the first part is too yin… Don’t prolongate this matter, the mediocre people will talk, end auspuciouly

Here the authors seems to give oposites translations, some as you should prolongate and others that you should halt. I follow that if you don’t prolongate you will not find the inauspicious end of the judgment, This to weak line in a time of conflict should not continue in the lawsuit and is humble to accept this.Even having some problems, as the mediocre people that will speak things about him, it is a way to end it auspuciously.
The masses inactivite will not continue the conflict proposed by the official and the three strong lines in the superior places, and should end the process quickly.

If the second part is too yang… You can’t proceed in a lawsuit, return and flee, it citizens three hundred families, not an error

In this too strong part, you are in the middle of a lawsuit but can’t continue the process and flees, this line still in the first position of powerc in the context where the surrounding lines are weak and the three superior lines strong, represents a power that will act actively but will soon realize that the situation is not propitious and flee and abandon the lawsuit, altough he have lost the lawsuit and is now a refugee, it will not be an error.
The official is strong and want to proceed with the lawsuit but is not possible, the strong line in the supreme receptive place act boldly and just can’t continue, because the three strong yang lines, in the most superior places will just assume a too much bold posture,
this line can’t keep the pace and been still low will have a unexpected end having to abandon the lawsuit and flee, but all this will not cause any harm.

If the third part is too yin… The virtue of eating an old food, persistence is problematic,
ends well.

In the third part, beeing too passive, is important the calm and patience to not take drastic meassures, like eating an old food “Revenge is a dish best served cold”, if this is practiced, will have a fortunate end.
The authority is in the amidst the strong official position and the group of superior strong positions, even in this position of second active, is important the calm to not act.

If the fourth part is too yang… You can’t proceed in a lawsuit, return to its fate, a tranquil persistence, auspicious

If the fourth part is too active, in a time of lawsuit, the too strong fourth line is within the strong superior group of three lines,

If the fifth part is too yang… You make a lawsuit, auspicious

If the fourth part is too yin… An army in the wrong order, not a problem.

The translation of this line is dificulty, the translation literary is: army;左zuǒ left (the opposite of right), left (leave), opposite, contrary, wrong; 次cì next, order, sequence. In the fouth place too passive, it is a place that is the auxiliar of the strong and center of attentions fifth line, is like arranging an alliance with someone not known by you yet, a new partner to strength your alliance, continue persisting, you will need to work to make this new partnership a fruitfull one.
Here the Minister alongside the ruler will be a surprising faithfull partner.

If the fifth part is too yang… Generous alliance, the king uses three sides to run, lose the front game, cityfolk people should not command. Auspicious.

The fifth line is the only strong line and, been in the supreme yang place, the line of commandship, everyone will obey its orders. The persons not acquinted with diplomacy and knowledge to choose the right alliances should not be employed, as cityfolks not used to hunting should not be used to prey a game, If you act this way, auspiciousness will fall upon you.
Here the ruler will activily command the nation, even in this time of union there is still the need to choose the friends carefully, the nation is primarilly weak.

If the sixth part is too yin… An alliance with no chief

The text literary say “an alliance without 首shǒu head” meaning leader, like the all lines of the hexagram 1: Vigorous.
The sixth line is something to late, or too high to enjoy the leadership of the fifth line, in a situation that all the attention is turned to the fifth line, the final part of the hexagram shows a weakness in a time of preparations, that alliances are still been made and the pieces of this game still been positioned. The Fifth line maybe will see this line as an adversary, that beeing higher maybe don’t obey it.

9-Raising small animals小畜 xiǎo xù
Yang yang yang yin yin yang

Judgement: Properous, dense clouds but no rain, on our western outskirts

This Character shows 小xiǎo small, said to represent dividing 八 of an object ( the line in the middle) making it small, 畜 xù raising animal, also meaning livestock, taming, a 田tián field where the livestock was maintained and 玄xuán green, later meaning black, dark, profound; the green fields, and phonetic. Some translations include the taming power of the small, the small is tamed, with ideas similar of that rising an inferior animal. There’s a doubt if the meaning of this would be “the small taming” or “the small tamed”, that becomes clear when we use the sense of rising animals, that represents the small being tamed.
This Hexagram portrait the fouth line, as the only humble line, in the too much strong hexagram (all other lines are strong), beeing in a position of almost supreme command, is like raising small animals, mantained under control, but still savage animals, and can bite the hand that feeds it. By the judgment you see this controlling power extreme powerfull as a violent thunderstorm (the thick clouds) in the horizon, but not yet ready to use all this energy (will not rain).
Here the almost complete strong nation, in this context, is hardly pressed to use this too much power but the weak minister by the side of the ruler, is a place too close to the supreme commander and will be dominated by the strong nation, and at the same time impede his progress.

If the first part is too yang… Returning to the road, what error could be?

This strong line, still in the beginning, is like as he could do nothing but it can because the strong energy and control this hexagram have (the rain about to fall), its like someone lost, that don’t know which direction to follow and find the a road to follow that leads certainly to somewhere.

In the second too active place, in the first place of power, it is guided to act with energy in this time of energy, it was like if it was lost but someone lead him to return, this is auspicious because here the force start to emerge and in this position the energy will find a way of using it because is too low.

If the third part is too yang… Carriage is based on its wheels, husband and wife stare at it other

This maybe the best example of mistranscription in the received text; here seemingly everyone translate 說shuō as 脱tuō meaning “the carriage loses his wheels”, which makes more sense than my translation and is more proper to the context of the line reading; I use 說shuō as a theory, a basis.
In this too strong line, in the second place of command, with the other lines at his command (first and second) strong, it represents a force trying to act, but don’t forget, the carriage is based on its wheels, where all weight is supported and the movement, one of the main reasons for a carriage; this line will need to use the other two first lines. If the fourth part is too yin … Have faith, blood comes out, tears flow, no problem

The translation “blood goes away and tears disappear” is also possible, and maybe make even more sense with the prospect of “no problem”, but again a seemingly contradictory reading in the Yi Jing would not be something new.
The humble fourth, as a place of reception, would normally have no problem obeying the strong lines, but in this context where the strength is too much, it represents a different idea than the rest of the hexagram and represents a dominance that maybe oppress this position, and impede the liberation of the energy of this hexagram, as someone needing to tame a small animal and the mean time could not do something else. You should have faith, even if bleeding and crying, maybe because you as bitten by the animal, you have the control and will have no problem in the end.

The character shows 尸shī a corpse, the spirits of the dead guiding us, 彳chì the left part of 行 xíng walk, 夂 zhǐ walking carefully, a person with a ⺈ person with a cane to help in his progress, the other part is said to be a modified part of 畐fú fonetic same as 復fù, going and return, sometimes said to be a representation of a shoe.
Others translations include treading, conduct, all meaning a form of action, movement and progress.

A dim-sighted(A dim-sighted can also be translated as one-eyed person) can see, a lame can still walk, all seem so simple, like the strong nation, with only the third place weak can act boldly, but a dim-sighted can walk seen the blurs but step on a tiger’s tail, a lame can walk but if he take not care he can slip and fall. This fourth line over the group with no leader and the two first lines advancing, will be the line that maybe escapes the tiger’s bite, altough stepping in its tail, too close too danger, all ends well.
The minister is the force that look over the third weak line is to control the weak spot of the hexagram, altough that risk, beeing the strongest part of the nation, it will handle this.

If the fifth part is too yang… Decisive walk, persistence is inauspicious

If The fifth lines is too strong, in the supreme yang place, the place of command, it will lead the nation in a restless action, its like a decisive walk, with no turning back. Altough this is generally good, in this context of strong action with a weak spot it could mean the nation is too focused and will not see the tiger’s tail; persisting in this way will be inauspicious, maybe could have better caution (see the next line).
The too strong ruler will lea the too yang action of the nation in a way that it will not stop, maybe overlooking that the second place of command that could help him is weak.

If the sixth part is too yang… Observing the walk and checking what is propitious, he comes back, supreme auspiciousness

if the sixth part is too strong, is where all this power will end, is where the conclusion of the hexagram will heappen. Here From the heights and the superior positions is possible too see where all this action will lead, is easy to maybe see the foliage moving, the traces left by the animal, and preventing the stepping on a tiger’s tail, or at least resort, being the highest and strongest place, discourage the tiger to attack.

11-Great泰tài
Yang yang yang yin yin yin

Something small goes, something big comes, auspicious, prosperous

This character shows the upper part what seems a fusion of 大dā big and 廾gǒng two hands and the lower 水shuǐ water, altough commonly writen with this diferent fashion(5 strokes), , maybe could mean dividing something, a stick and the parts beeing divided, as in 八bā and 敝bì. I think it represents the fact of washing (water) hands(the two hands) before an offering (you can see this habit in the Judgment of hexagram 20 watching of the Yi Jing)and receiving something great(大dā) . The word is the same of 太tài, great, very, too. as in taijiquan.
Others translations include peace, interplay, flowing, etc. The term Great comes from the judgment, something big is coming, although something small is sacrificed, Peace don’t seem to represent the idea of this hexagram by the lines texts, attacking is auspicious, lost friends, the city losing its walls, it is interesting that the Hexagram name does not appear anytime in the lines. Interplay and flowing, maybe, but not at the level as seen in the description of the composed trigrams, a strong(heaven trigram) subduing the weak (earth trigram), but I don’t see etymological reasons for these translations.
This hexagram shows the distinction of two equal groups in numbers, three yang lines in the begining and three yin lines in the end. It is after the shock of the initial motion of thunder 临lín overseeing and the pressing after the yang lines are too strong in 兑duì discussion. The exact moment of peace, the great and solid base in the lower part of the hexagram and a upper part receptive. The judgment could be translated as “small (yin) comes( since it is in the yin trigram, that represent future, what rised, the conclusion, and big goes (since it os in the yang trigram, yang is past, emerging, creating, what comes). This probably means if the great nation have a too solid beginning, is a auspicious time to attack because in the lower part is still to low to act too boldly, and will make this nation act and make this nation show its greatness, Removing the obstacles (reeds) will be easy and all of it will easily follow.
The masses will act boldly if the officer and the authority try something like attacking, even having the weak superior positions, they will try it too. To this nation is better attack the root of the problem, literary.

If the second part is too yang… Concealed, acting wading the river, not much distant, the friend is lost, obtain a reward while on a travel

Again trying to take risky measures, like cross the river, the friend is lost, something bad will happen perhaps with others but not you or this too strong line. Obtain a reward while on a travel, it is still good to venture outside if is not something dangerous.
The official is the supreme receptive place will generally accept and follow the orders of the other lines, but the context is not to do something dangerous but continue his works will be propitious.

If the third part is too yang… Not a smooth level without a slope, not a going without a return, difficulties, persist; not anxious in his faith, have blessings during the meal.

If the fifth part is too yin… King Yi gave his daughter in marriage, in being happy, supremely auspicious.

The too much humble as King Yi, a King that, as a sign of thrust, although not having the possessions in great number as the other family. Most scholars translate this hexagram as pronounced pǐ, bad, inferior; i prefer the translation fǒu, no, negate, deny. This character shows 口kǒu mouth and 不bù not, no. someone said a order of not doing something.
This hexagram shows two, equal in numbers, distinct groups, the weak base of yin lines and the superior yang lines. This comes after hexagram 33 Retreat 遯 dùn, that represent the trigram of wind, like 巽 xùn where the yin lines obey the yang lines, and before hexagram 20 Watching 觀 guān, like mountain 艮gèn, where the yang lines are left with only watching the majority of yin lines; is the time of imposing a force against the not in minority yin lines, the situation is as of the power of the nation blocked by its weak base. This hexagram represents 少陰shǎo yīn, or new yin, yin coming.

In this yang place the devotion and simplicity of the authority is seen as if he could do better.

If the fourth part is too yang … You have command, not a fault, the cultivated fields is separated from happiness.

If the fourth place is too active, you have the strength, the command, to continue your affairs, but the cultivated fields, your hard work is still away from happiness.
The too humble official make part of the strong group of yang lines, he have command, even been too strong will not be a error, but the deeds like the arable field still don’t offer happiness.

The Judgment: Among people in the wilds, prosperous, favorable cross the great river, favorable the gentleman’s persistence.

These characters show 同tóng same, with, together, a cover of the lid and 冃mào a cover of a lid and 口kǒu mouth, an opening, fitting together; and 人rén man or men, two human legs(there is no differentiation of singular and plural in Chinese).
The situation is as if we are with other people in the wilds, we will be making useful plans and alliances or at risk of being outnumbered? The soft yin line in the supreme receptive place represents the person that whom people will gather around but the rest of the nation is to strong and want to act( the attack seen in the lines). Is favorable to cross the great river, overcome the obstacles, and the perseverance of a gentleman, an perseverance of a noble who is powerful and apt to act.

It is like a powerful like a tiger but lacking strength, it will hold itself and come to no fault.

If the fifth part is too yin… A standstill persistence is lucky, cannot cross the great river

In the weak supreme yang place have a important position but it still be advisable to cede to the impulse and maintain a standstill persistence. Even if you try you will not be able to cross the great river, face the great difficulties.
The soft ruler will be in the time of hungry inappropriate. It will bring lucky persisting in a passive manner; the problems cannot yet be overcome.

If the sixth part is too yang… The motivation of the jaws, lucky in severity, favorable cross the great river

The first character shows 大dà a 人rén person with outstretched arms, meaning big, great, and 過guò pass, excess, too (much), 辶chuò go and 咼 guō a skeleton and a mouth, phonetic; together they mean great in excess, or perhaps the way of the great; I prefer the former because the line texts deals with something great that is so in excess that its base (the ridgepole) will sag. The simplified form is 大过. Others translations include big surpassing, preponderance of the big, etc.
This hexagram makes a pair with 62-Small excess 小過xiǎoguò, and make perfect sense if we use 大dà as the yang, rigid, unbroken line, as in excess or preponderance in this hexagram, in major number, and there the yin, flexible, broken lines are in major numbers, and have a preponderance, and perhaps 大人dàrén and 小人xiǎorén as the yang and the yin, as is for example used by various translators and the 彖傳tuànzhuàn; but I don’t have the same Idea, although here is where it makes more sense.
The idea behind this hexagram is of all the places of power are yang, representing a great excess of power, that makes evident that are in excess and not because the first and sixth line are weak and don’t offer support, like a big and luxurious construction that the ridgepole do not supports. The symmetry also plays an important role. Although this excess is a abundance of strength, is favorable going in a journey, start new projects; it will be prosperous.

If the first part is too yin… In the mat use white reeds, no fault

Here the situation of union and army together, here the supreme yin place and supreme yang place dispute the control of the yin lines and, in this context, the upper and bottom trigrams of water mean danger. Here the official assuming the control over the masses and the authority and the ruler assuming control over the minister and personalities, enter in conflict.

If the first part is too yin… Repeated pits, enter in a cave in the pit, unlucky.

If the sixth part is too yin…bound by the use of a rope, if weren’t the thorns… three years will not obtain anything, unlucky.

In the sixty part too much inactive, where all is decided, even if someone use a rope to pull you from the pit there are thorns in the way, for a long time will not be able to accomplish anything, this is bad.
The text say the person is bound by a rope, in my interpretation I supposed that is someone trying to rescue them. The thorns were used in Ancient china to impede the passage of persons, as we use now barbed wire.
The too much weak grandparents in this dangerous situation will not offer the respect needed for this family, even with help they will be impeded.

30- Brightness 離lí
Yang yin yang yang yin yang

The Judgment: Favorable persistence, prosperous. Raise a cow, lucky.

This character shows 离, the ancient form of this character depict a bird getting caught (or maybe escaping, as departing and separating is one of the modern meanings of this character) and 隹 zhuī, a bird. The character is simplified simply removing the left part: 离.One of the meanings was of one bird that sang beautifully, supposedly yellow as the sun, then the meaning of brightness, taken principally from the text of the third line. Others meanings are light, fire, a net, Etc.
This hexagram shows a weak supreme yang and yin places, the rest of the hexagram is strong. The most passive and active, places are soft and will have to contain the rest of the active hexagram; it is like a light of the day that will bring all his energy but the night will inevitably come, the fire during night that, if not cared well, will extinguish; the light of the torch that will soon end.
Raising a cow, the text specify a female of a bull, can bring various interpretations, as a faithful helper docile as a cow; for me a female cow was a thing that the ancient Chinese had as a property of been an accumulation of meat (resources), and a female can provide milk constantly. This will bring good fortune in a moment of expenditure and that darker moments are coming.

If the first part is too yang…walking stumbling, respect them and no problem

In this strong start, maybe the too much activity is not appropriated, as walking too fast have a risk of stumbling, if you respect this strength and not try to oppose the force of this hexagram, nothing bad will happens.
The youngest son will act recklessly because the situation seems of disorder, it is not time to punish but guide him.

If the second part is too yin… A yellow light, supreme lucky

Here in the beginning, the supreme receptive place, is the most appropriate to establish an equilibrium, a too weak base will bring the peace and tranquility needed to this situation, A yellow and pure light, with no problems, this will mean a great luck.
This character could also mean a yellow li bird, even it is obvious confusingly, would be not the first time (see 49-Revolution, first line), because the Yi Jing is a artwork and not simply a book.
The middle daughter, offer an equilibrium of the younger and inexperienced son and the supposed leadership of the elder brother will offer an softness necessary to the whole hexagram.

If the third part is too yang… Brightness of a declining sun. Don’t beat the drums and sing, then will sigh as an old man, unlucky.

If you don’t maintain the moral high, as beating drums and singing, as a flame that is not nourished, then you will find it extinguishing as the last sigh of an old man. This is inauspicious.

In the last part the too yang, “the flame burns more when it is about to die” none of the yang lines are in excess, changing, except this one. The translation “eliminating leaders” is also possible, as 首shǒu means both leader and head (see 1-乾 qián vigorous: all lines changing.); capturing a leader means a swift conclusion, going direct to the point, that what this hexagram advise.
Only the Grandfathers can in this higher place produce a result, although through an risk action can use and put an end to wrong doings. This should bring no further drawbacks.

31-Influence咸xián

The Judgment: Prosperous, favorable persistence, get a woman means luck

This character shows 口kǒu and 戌xū destroy, the power of soft destruction of indirect speech, it is the influence of all, the salty responsibility to lead without acting.
This is one of the most difficult hexagram names 卦名guàmíng, because the context of the lines does not help much; I used the judgment to imagine this meaning. Other meanings are wooing, cutting.
This hexagram shows the most influential places, the two higher active places and the fourth place, the helper of the fifth place; the other yin lines means this hexagram will not have the power to direct act. Get a woman is auspicious, is favorable user your influence. The word 取qǔ means get and not have; this means you should exert your influence to obtain, not simply influence an already receptive (in the Chinese society) woman.

If the first part is too yin… Influence in the big toe

You influence in the very beginning, this will be not a difficult task.
The youngest son will be influenced by the characteristic of this family.

If the second part is too yin… Influence in the calf of the leg, unlucky. Reside brings luck

This character shows the heart and mind radical 忄of 心 xīn, and 亙gèng, a moon with a stroke above and beneath, the period of the sun 月yuè to pass from one side to another (the phases of the moon are used to calculate the passage of time), written similar to 亘 gèn, used in the simplified character 恒héng,旦dàn a dawn, but with a different meaning;
This hexagram shows a situation where the inactive start is followed by three strong places; the last, the preparation for the supreme place, are followed by the weak leadership and conclusion. Constancy is necessary against an inappropriate action by this incoming force. Is favorable persistence because you soon will get results. Have somewhere to go is good, risking in new journeys, your constancy will get rewards.

If the first part is too yin… Dragging constancy, persistence is unlucky, not distant from benefit

The first line too inactive will be seeking for constancy, but this pursue in that situation will bring misfortune; in the beginning may represent that this is not prepared to be constant.
The youngest son will be trying a constancy that will be not be possible, The rest of the family maybe will contribute with his constancy.

If the second part is too yang… Regrets disappear

If the fourth part is too yang… The field has no game

The fourth line too active in this context will try to accomplish things, but is time of constancy, deeds are yet to come. They will hunt, not a bad thing, but will not find a game, yet…
The mother will by the side of the father, but no higher place is strong, will be time for constancy, but not accomplishments.

If the fifth part is too yin… Constant in its virtue, persist; women is lucky, men unlucky

The fifth part is too, will be need a constant virtue, persistence in bringing. It is important to be patient and helpful as a woman, and then this constancy will be reached.
The father’s lack of energy will be a constancy in this situation, even acting whith a more passive and other feminine characteristic.

If the sixth part is too yin… Arousing constancy, unluck

In the last part too soft, this will be the most , in this place the lack of strength and the arousing power of the hexagram will cause problems.
The grandparents will encounter an inconstant situation that the too much inactivity will not impede, and the too much inactive higher place will draw a lack of control.

33- Retreat 遯 dùn
Yin yin yang yang yang yang

The Judgment: Prosperous, small profit in persistence

The character shows someone going and retreating,辶辵 chuò, walking, to security like a pig 豚 tún. In fact some authors consider this a mistranscription and that this is a hexagram should be named 豚 the piglet.
This character shows similar ideas to 巺xùn, the bottom one-third in the lowest position
have no option, obey the majority two-thirds strong lines. But here the lines are too low and escaping is the only solution with the active higher parts. This make even more sense if this hexagram is named 豚tún , like a pig, obedient, enclosed in its pen. But the escape will succeed. Not much favorable persistence,

If the first part is too yin… At the tail of retreat

Here the too yin first line offers a weak base for a retreat. “Tail” is a common Chinese expression to represent someone in the last position of a chain, for example the last place of a line of people. But this could be evidence that this character was originally “the pig”, using the translation as the pig tail.
The youngest son is at the beginning, so weak, with a great distinction of strength, is better move.

If the second part is too yin… Secure with the use of brown ox hide, no one say it will succeed

In the second line too yin, will be impeded as with the use of hide (the color here is 黄huáng , yellow, also means brown giving the context, see the 五 行 wǔxíng, five elements or phases, where yellow is a color attributed to the element of earth). 34- Big strength 大狀 dà zhuàng

This Hexagram has similar ideas of the 58 discussion, the big (yang lines), lower two-thirds of the hexagrams in greater number try to uses his strength (yang) to persuade the weak leader and weak personalities even if they are higher in hierarch, will be a time that brute force will be used.

If the first part is too yang… Strong in the toes, attacking is inauspicious, have trustfulness

Power in the toes is good, isn’t it? But in this context where the yang lines try to use force against the yin lines, this power still much below and is not time to attack. Some translators seems this ambiguous passage and see a mistranscription of 狀zhuàng strong for 戕qiāng wounded in the toes, even if zhuàng was already in the text; but the complexity of the Yi Jing don’t allow to so simple conclusions, examples of difficult translations can easily be seen all over the book.

This character shows 日rì sun coming out, the time advancing. I use the more restrict meaning of progressing. Other meanings are Advancement, etc.
This hexagram shows the assistance of the fourth place and the highest place strong. They try the progress allowed by the three lowest places and the soft leader. A strong movement are expected, blessed by the receptivity of the soft lines, like receiving horses and being received by the lord thrice a day.

If the first part is too yin… Like advancing, like destroying, persistence is lucky. You, very trustful, are betrayed. No regrets

While this hexagram advances, this will be like destruction to this too soft line, still in the beginning where there is no power; persist. In a time of advancement, you be very trustful, but you will be betrayed, you should proceed with care, but nothing bad will happen.

36-light obscured 明夷míng yí

The Judgment: Favorable, Persistence in difficulties

These characters show 明 míng clear, bright, a sun 日rì and a moon 月yuè, and 夷 yí, barbarians, exterminate, haze, wound, a big 大dà bow 弓gōng; the meaning may be simply a cloudy day, perhaps an eclipse, a sunset, a curtain… Other translations are wounded light, light obstructed, etc. Others see it as a mistranscription of “bright pheasant” 明雉míng zhì.
This hexagrams shows the command of the third line and the active beginning, would be a bright start if were not the obscure higher places and the inactive base of the supreme yin place.

If the first part is too yang… Obscured light. At flight, drop his wings. The gentleman in a journey, three days does not eat. Have somewhere to go. The lord will talk

This too active beginning, try fly high but will have danger; this could be a sign that this hexagrams means “bright pheasant”. The gentleman will risk a journey, will suffer some problems, the light is obstructed.. Is auspicious these actions , although the commentaries of powerful people.
The youngest son will be the energy of light, although still so inexperienced, is important that he shines.

If the second part is too yin… Obscured light, wounded in the left thigh, use the strong horse to rescue. Luck

The light is obstructed, as a wound in the thigh (the word 夷 is used two times here), not the most important of the two legs. But there still a latent brightness but impeded in this hexagram, will be the strong horse to rescue. Auspicious.
The middle daughter will be unable to act, but will be led by the shiny elder brother. This receptivity will bring luck.

If the third part is too yang… Obscured light at a hunt in the south, obtains its big leader. Cannot persist, is sick

The light obstructed, in a hunt in the south, the direction of the sun in China, captures the big leader as sun rays that escape the shadows and dry the earth and exhaust the animals and men. But cannot go too far, as been sick; is blocked.
The eldest son will actively lead the situation. Will shine but for not so much time, is obscured.

If the fourth part is too yin… Penetration in the left abdomen. Obtain the core of the wounded light, while going out the gates of the courtyard

In This line too passive you can see what is causing the block of the light if you have a ample view, like risking going outward the doors. You will see the place of assistance hurt, the cause to not bright.
The mother is what immediately impeding the sons to shine, she cannot help with the subject.

If the fifth part is too yin… Ji zi obscured light, favorable persistence
箕子Jī zǐ was a relative and against the last tyrant of the 商Shāng Dynasty, afterwards helping the estabilishment of the 周Zhōu Dynasty. As his virtues were obscured by the king of Shāng, after his persistence his light finally could shine.
The weak command of the father is just a temporary drawback, in this position will seen obcure but the light will eventually appear.

If the sixth part is too yin… Not bright, dark. First ascend to heaven, afterwards enter the earth.

The highest place will see a complete darkness, this line will not allow any light escape. Any attempt to fly high will result in a disastrous fall.
The grandfather will make this family not arise, but afterwards the lack of energy of the higher places will be severe, specially the highest that will bring a dark conclusion in a time of obscuring the light.

37- The Family 家人jiā rén

The Judgment: Favorable women persistence

This character shows a cover宀 and the domestication of animals as a pig豕shǐ, the estabilishment of a home after the errant life of the ancients, a house; and 人rén, two legs, a person; persons living under the same roof. Others translations are the household,
This character shows the two lowest receptive places yin, giving support to the other lines. The active lines shows the force sometimes needing to be tamed of this hexagram, ruled by the higher place strong. This hexagram is like a family, with its places of obedience and command as seen in the ancient Chinese society, principally the receptive women; 孝xiào filial piety but with the rigor of example, would say Confucius 孔子kǒng zǐ. Needing a tranquil organization, like the persistence of a woman.

If the first part is too yang… Idle at home, regrets disappear

This too active line is still not in time of use, will be idle at home. All remorse for this action will disappear.
The youngest son still not have a place of power to use his force, there’s rigor in the family, The regrets will go away.

If the second part is too yin… not satisfied, amidst of preparing a meal, persistence is lucky

The too weak second part is not satisfied with rigor; there are the commander’s and the one’s that needs to obey. At home with domestic tasks; not the best thing.
The middle daughter will be disciplined, persistence is needed to bear the responsibility.

If the third part is too yang… The family member disciplines; regrets, severe luck. The wife laugh, in the end is problematic

With this only too much rigid line, there will be a rigorous discipline in this second place of command, but there’s higher places of command; this may cause a break of command if this line try to act too boldly.
The eldest son will regret, will be a difficult luck. May have disorder, then the end will be problematic.

If the fourth part is too yin… Rich house, great lucky

The fourth part very receptive may seem a weak support to the higher places, but in this context will be a necessary obedience to maintain the house happy.
The mother and his softness will be the counter-part to the action of the higher places, how fortunate!

If the fifth part is too yang… The king resting, have a house. Do not be anxious; lucky

There will be need a strong discipline; even if need to rest for a period, the powerful king will have a place to rest.
The father will be a the person that all look upon like a king, this will not be even a big burden. This command will be auspicious.

If the sixth part is too yang… Have trust, like if powerful. End will be lucky

This line, after all others, seems to be contradicting the almost perfect order of active and passive places; but is this line that will give the impression of strength and order in the family. The last part too active, will need trust, it is powerful and will maintain the house, in the end all will be well.
The grandparents are the ancestors, so venerated by the Chinese, respected as if they are powerful. With the higher place actively, will bring lucky in the end.

38- Embarrassment 睽kuī

The Judgment: Small matters are lucky

This character shows a 目mù eye, and 癸guǐ, two feet 癶bò and a 矢shǐ arrow, now 天tiān; two feet ascending and an arrow, a goal, the eye staring at a fixed point, The attention of an embarrassment. Others translations are Opposition, separation.etc., indicating the contradiction of this hexagram; you can see in the line texts uncomfortable situations, so the name I choose.
This hexagram represents a situation where the two places of command are soft but the rest of the hexagram are active. This create a latent energy that, when is ready to be used, is abandoned. This create an embarrassment of the strong subordinates and the weak but in place of conclusion of the third and fifth line; A difficult situation follows.

If the first part is too yang… Regrets disappear. A horse is lost, don’t pursue, by itself will return. See an ugly man, no problem

A horse is lost, a symbol of strength, carrying things and the subject. See an ugly man; 悪 can be translate also as evil, that you would be embarrassed by his past doings. A little uncomfortable but no problem.
The youngest son’s strength will be lost in a so low position, but will be of use soon. Embarrassment, but nothing wrong.

If the second part is too yang… Encounter the Lord in a Lane, no problem

In this too active place, you unusually encounter your master in a lane; it is a formal encounter? It requires respect? Informality? Embarrassment. The lord is not in a position to act with command, the strong subject also will not act as an superior. But no problem will be caused.
The middle daughter not face impediments, but the whole situation is of inactivity by the respectful members that she should obey.

If the third part is too yin… See a cart dragged, its bull pulling, its person tattooed and nose cut. Not started but will have an end.

A cart will be pulled by a strong bull, this command place is inactive but the force of others will be used, small matters can still be accomplished. The person is a condemned person, with his forehead tattooed and nose cut, a common punishment in ancient China; disorder will not be allowed. A different person like that is curious, look or not look? Embarrassment.
The eldest son will not be active and the whole hexagram tries to act, the leaders think the opposite. In the right time there will be use for this activity, not acting at first but will have a conclusion.

If the fourth part is too yang…Embarrassment alone, encounter an extraordinary man, befriend with him; believe. Severe, not a problem

Embarrassment will come from himself, you will find someone to follow, have trust. It is no time of putting this energy into use. Will be a complicated situation but, will not bring great problems
The mother will be embarrassed by the situation that he is, but if he follows there will be no conflict.

If the fifth part is too yin…Regrets disappear, lose consciousness and an ancestor bite the skin. Proceed; what error could be?

There will be no regret with the embarrassment . All this activity will be too much for this line that faints. Will be betraying by someone near; the word here 宗zōng can be a sect, a clan, a religion. But continue, will not interfere in the plans.
The father in this conflicting situation there will be almost a lost of control, but it must continue to guide the advance.

If the sixth part is too yang…Embarrassment alone, see a pig get lost from its mud. A well loaded cart, first pull out the bow, after explain why pulled it. They are not robbers, came to propose marriage. Proceeding encounter rain, then lucky.

If the sixth part is too active, will be embarrassed by itself. Lose a loyal subject as a domesticate pig escaping from its mud. There’s the higher place and strength, it is like a loaded cart; at the defense of it appears to be danger, but can be a cause for alliance. Small troubles then the resources will be of good use.
The grandfather can be a risk for the family in a time of confusion as if it were rich, loaded of goods. Will have a risk of conflict but in the end can help pass through the obstacles.

39-Stumbling蹇jiǎn
Yin yin yang yin yang yin

The Judgment: Favorable southwest, not favorable northeast. Favorable meet the great man, persistence brings luck.

This character shows a foot 足zú foot , and the upper part塞, a blockage; feet that are blocked while walking. Other translations are lame, obstruction.
This hexagram shows the act of stumbling in something, but for stumble you need to dare to give a step. We stumble in obstacle, sometimes caused by ourselves, if we are paying attention where we tread we would possibly not stumble. The two active places are the only ones that then lead the hexagram, but can cause a conflict; there will be advance but a risk of fall. The advices are somewhat contradictory; it advices going to the safety of southwest but facing a great man. Maybe is best to not risk but face it with its leadership once upon it. Persist.

If the first part is too yin… proceeding stumbling, arrives with reputation

It is possible to advance, you just need to know the right direction, this too weak line will have the reputation of the two strong lines in the command places, this will help it.
The youngest son walks stumbling, but has the indirect leadership of the strong places.

If the second part is too yin… The King’s servant stumbling, a situation to not bow

This line is passive as a servant, but still not time to bow, amidst the conflict it is better not choose whom to serve yet. While stumbling, we don’t know if it will continue to walk or fall, or their trajectories. In the humble base will be a time of introspection, a conclusion will soon follow.

This too passive line will give support to the fifth line and no other line will be too strong, it will be a continously steps. It will continue to advance besides stumbling, there’s not an eager will so this line thinks advance is still good.
The mother will help maintain the control of this family, but will still stumble.

If the fifth part is too yang… Big stumble, friends come

If the fifth line is too strong, there will be sure a stumble, there will be much energy. But in this position there is command and the other lines will obey.

If the sixth part is too yin… Proceed stumbling, comes large; luck. Favorable meet the great man.

51-Thunder 震 zhèn
Yang yin yin yang yin yin

The Judgment: Prosperous. Thunder comes terrifying, laughs spoken “ha ha”, the thunder terrifies a hundred miles, don’t lose a spoon of sacrificial ladle.

This character shows a 雨 yǔ (rain), and 辰 chén phonetic.
This hexagram have similar ideas of 19 approach, like there the one-third lower of the Hexagram represent its start and the shock of the beginning, like the first sun rays when we are so used to darkness; but here this start is not so below, it is start everywhere, hence the attributes of thunder and earthquake; I prefer the former because of the component 雨 yǔ (rain).

52-Limiting 艮gèn
Yin yin yang yin yin yang

The Judgment: Limited in its back, but don’t catch his body. Go out in the courtyard, but don’t see his people, not a fault.

The ancient form of this hexagram show an eye over a man, similar to the character of見jiàn 目mù eye over 人 rén person, someone keeping an eye on someone; only in the Yi jing its pronounced gèn and have this meaning. Other translations are stopping, keeping still, cutting.
Others Translations are stilling, keeping still, stopping, all showing the exhaustion of the forces of this hexagram.
This Hexagram shows the yang third line in the second highest command place, with the majority of the others lines yin trying to assume a commandship, but the top yang line, ahead the place of comandment, with the rest of the lines constituing a weak croud.
Someone grab his back, but can’t stop him holding the whole body, he goes out in the courtyard but don’t see any known person.

54-Marrying maiden歸妹guīmèi

The Judgment: Attacking is inauspicious, not having benefit

This character shows a 𠂤duī wall over 止zhǐ foot and 帚zhǒu a hand on the top and a broom, . The simple form is 归
This character is said to depict a festive moment (perhaps because of the trigram 兑duì on the the bottom that some authors translate this hexagram as happiness, and the movement of thunder 震zhèn), but, by the judgment and the line readings, I don’t see it represents such situation. Perhaps we should see a little further from the festive reunion, the special garments, the party and the music that generally make part of the day of the ceremony. What the occasion of marrying a little sister really represents? Maybe I can help, since I had a younger little sister and we had to separate because she had to continue his life pursuits (she was not marrying, but if she were would be the same) and I was really not happy with this situation, it was a moment of sorrow.
This situation shows the strong two first lines with a weak command of the second highest yang place, with the fourth line strong too facing the leadership and highest position weak. The strong beggining represented by the two first lines don’t find a command in the third place nor fifth, and fourth place is the top most strong place ready to change the top most lines, its a situation that will bring changes, like the changing life of the little maiden and the people around her. It’s not auspicious to attack in a situation that had already to estabilish its new conditions. Not will be beneficial, is one interpretation according to my views of the hexagram already said, but the translation “Benefit is not very far” is also possible, although the common usage of 攸yōu throughout the Yi Jing do not suggests so.

55- Abundance 豐fēng
Yang yin yang yang yin yin

The Judgment: Prosperous. The king resting, have no worries, suitable the noon sun.

If the first part is too yang… Encounter his own lord, although ten days have passed, no problem, proceeding have rewards.

If the second part is too yin… Abundance, his screen in the noon sun, see the dipper, proceeding obtain doubts and illness, have trust as if developing, luck

If the third part is too yang… Abundance in his superiority, at noon sun sees stardust, break his right forearm, no problems

If the fourth part is too yang… Abundance in his screen, at noon sun sees the dipper, encounter his master destroyed. Luck

If the fifth part is too … Comes a badge, celebrate your reputation, luck

If the sixth part is too … Abundance in his room, screening his house, peeking through the door, Quiet in his solitude, three years cannot meet face to face, unluck

57-Obedience 巽 xùn
Yin yang yang yin yang yang

The Judgment: A little prosperous, favorable have somewhere to go, favorable see the great man

This character show two people kneeling on top (long ago belived to show two seals, but most recent excavations suggest the former hipotesis) and on bottom two hands over a table (not related with 共gòng together), showing the plans or orders over a table with the two hands, the two persons accepting it.
This has similar ideas of 33 retreat, the one-third low yin passive lines obey the majority two-thirds strong in a high position. The result is a time of peace and conformity.

58-Discussion 兌duì
Yang yang yin yang yang yin

The Judgment: Prosperous, favorable persistence

This character show a mouth 口kǒu with two human legs 儿ér, with something coming out of the mouth on top (in the modern character seems a little different 兑,not related with 兄xiōng older brother). It’s not much used as a word but more as component, as in the most used 說(说)shuō (adding言yán talk, meaning speak) (wich is used in 彖传tuàn zhuàn, an ancient and famous commentary on the hexagrams) and 悦yuè (adding 心xīn, meaning pleasure), wich most authors prefer to tranlate, but I prefer see 兑as a word with its own right, with a meaning probably broader then its conterparts. I think some of the original meaning was retained in the modern usage of the word, that means convert, exchange; a negotiation, a discussion.
This hexagram has similar ideas of the 34 Big uses force, the lower two-thirds yang in greater number try to persuade the yin lines, even in a higher place; but there the yang lines are on the bottom of the hexagram and the yin occupies the supreme yang place, here yin occupy the third line, meaning the bottom trigram has a weaker leader.

59- Flood 渙 huàng
